Queenstown has been ranked the top New Zealand destination in Trip Advisor 2012 Travellers' Choice Awards - 'Top Destinations in the South Pacific'.
Queenstown’s staggering beauty and heart-pumping thrills have earned international accolades at this year’s Travellers Choice Awards run by the world's biggest travel website.
Based on millions of Trip Advisor traveller reviews and opinions, New Zealand’s premier four-season lake and alpine resort ranked third among the top 25 destinations in the South Pacific. Queenstown came in just behind Sydney and BoraBora and ahead of other New Zealand destinations.
In the 2011 awards Queenstown was the only New Zealand location to make Trip Advisor’s list of top 25 destinations in the world, Queenstown ranked 12th. Queenstown was also the top NZ destination for food and wine in the South Pacific in 2011. Both of these awards have yet to be announced for 2012.
In the 2012 Travellers Choice awards section Trip Advisor sums up Queenstown...
'Staggering beauty and heart-pumping thrills await in the resort town of Queenstown, which is also known for its Hobbits—much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in the area. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Queenstown for the kayaking, bungee jumping, jetboating, white-water rafting, hiking and skiing. More mild-mannered adventurers can take a quiet cruise through nearby Milford Sound, part of the Fjordland National Park World Heritage area, or sample South Island pinot noir from one of the region's 75 wineries.'
