On Saturday the crowds were treated to loads of thrills and spills at the first ever '2012 Red Bull Roast It' BMX Dirt Jump Competition at the QMTBC Gorge Road Jump Park.

Some of the best dirt bike riders in the world turned up to crank out their most crazy tricks during the casual jam sessions in front of the judges and the buzzing thousand strong crowd. The field included Anthony Napolitan (USA), Brandon Dosch (USA) and Jai Bradley (AUS) competing against NZ's own George Bolter, Jed Milton and Paul Langlands. Paul battled it out in a 16 man superfinal against the heavyweighs to take out the top honour for Best Rider.

The QMTBC Gorge Road Jump Park is considered one of the biggest collection of jumps in the world with heaps of different lines to keep it interesting. The riders made back-flips, front-flips, flinging their bikes around and sticking the big tricks look easy. There were a few unstuck moments but the riders just casually dusted themselves off and went straight back for another go, gaining plenty of respect from the masses.

The jump park is lovingly built and maintained by BMX enthusiasts from the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club. These dirt farmers give up a lot of free time to keep this facility at the highest standard and free for anyone to use. We are lucky to have such dedicated locals who did an amazing job putting on a great event. I'll definitely be back next year for more dirt park action!
