Rubbish tip turned refuge, the Kiwi Park has been in operation since 1986. We are home to over 20 native species of wildlife all here as part of managed conservation programs through the Department of Conservation.

Look! It`s New Zealand`s most famous flightless bird
...the weka?
Ok, it might not be as famous as some of its flightless buddies, but these little ground-lovers are way more than just a counterfeit kiwi.
Not only are weka pros at identity theft, they`ve also got a knack for the old snatch and grab. If you have ever bumped into one while you`re out tramping or camping, you may have been a victim of their mischievous ways.
Weka are curious and bold birds (traits not exactly common in kiwi) and they`ve got a thing for inspecting and ‘borrowing’ any stuff lying around that catches their eye.
We reckon this just adds to their awesome character, making us love and appreciate them all the more.

One way to identify the sex of a kiwi is by its unique call.
A male kiwi will emit a series of repeated high-pitched notes, while the female kiwi will often interrupt him... with her own more guttural cry.

With Easter this weekend, we thought it only appropriate to feature this cute chick for #wildwednesdaynz.
Did you know that the Ruru has almost 20 alternative names, including the more common `Morepork` as well as `Boobook` over the ditch in Australia?
Many of these names are onomatopoeic, as they emulate the bird`s distinctive two-pitched call. Swipe left to hear the ruru call. What does it sound like to you?

What`s a possum doing at a Kiwi wildlife conservation park?
Our mission is to protect and restore our native taonga species through hands-on conservation projects and education. We share in-depth knowledge on all aspects of wildlife conservation, including the invasive species and predators that threaten our native bird population.
Through education, we aim to empower our visitors with the understanding that they, too, can make a positive impact on our wildlife and the environment.
As a visitor, you have the opportunity to join our live conservation show, which runs daily at 11 am, 1:30 pm, and 4 pm.
