Sherwood Queenstown

This re-purposed mock Tudor 1980's motor court perched atop a hill with fantastic views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables describes itself as a ‘Community Hotel’. With yoga, pilates and meditation classes, regular workshops, gigs and DJ's on site, talks by artists-in-residence and more, the Sherwood follows its ‘Be Here Now’ mantra to the letter. The fresh, seasonal food from the hotel’s own gardens, orchards and surrounding farms also nourishes your body and soul. Find out about Sherwood Queenstown.

Mt Nicholas High Country Station

Mt Nicholas High Country Station

Mt Nicholas Station

This historic, family-run working high country farm, set on 100,000 acres between Queenstown and Glenorchy, has two very different options for guests: the newly refurbished and very private White’s Bay Cabin which has a living room with a log fire and a large bathroom; or for larger groups of up to 20, genuine farm accommodation at the Shearers’ Quarters in bunkhouse-style rooms. You can choose either to relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and mountains, or take the opportunity to experience some of the many adventures on offer including hunting or fly fishing. Getting there is part of the fun, you can either arrive by water taxi, The Spirit of Queenstown catamaran or helicopter. Find out more about Mt Nicholas High Country Station.

Kinloch Lodge

For a completely different perspective of the area, drive around the top of the lake past Glenorchy and the turn-off for Paradise to peaceful Kinloch Lodge, a modest but charming historic hotel. There are two types of rooms here: Wilderness Rooms are perfect for trampers tackling the Routeburn Track, think a good youth hostel or backpacker-style accommodation, with various bedding configurations; while the Heritage Rooms in the 19th century lodge building offer a more boutique experience. The shared kitchen and bathroom facilities are excellent, and there is a good restaurant and bar on site.

Kinross Cottages

One of the best things about Central Otago is of course its wine, and you can stay among the picturesque vineyards of Gibbston at one of 14 studio cottages at Kinross Cottages. On-site is a cellar door and cafe, but you’re halfway between Cromwell and Queenstown if you want to explore further afield. The cottages, nestled among Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gurwurtztraminer vines, have their own fully equipped kitchens, there’s an outdoor hot tub, ski drying room, bikes for hire, and picnic and play areas. You can transform two of the cottages into family accommodation thanks to their adjoining doors and enjoy a lovely meal onsite at the Kinross Winery & Cafe.
