E-Bikes Collecting City Rubbish and Recycling

In a New Zealand first - two electric bikes (e-bikes) are set to collect rubbish and recycling from public litter bins in the Queenstown town centre throughout the summer months.

The local council in the Queenstown region has recently put in place a number of solutions to ensure a smarter and more environmentally friendly waste service for the district.

The latest development is a New Zealand first - electric bike rubbish collections - which will operate in the town centre during the summer months. According to Jim Boult, Major of Queenstown Lakes, this new initiative will remove the need for large trucks circulating the town centre to empty the bins which will lower carbon emissions, reduce congestion in the town centre and will be cheaper to operate.

The e-bike drivers will also be providing community education on how to dispose of waste in the public litter bins appropriately.

The rubbish and recycling collection fleet already includes one electric truck and two three-way split-body trucks allowing for one vehicle to complete a full collection of both rubbish and recycling while keeping the materials separate.

If you would like to find out how you can best recycle and dispose of rubbish during your stay, see here.
