Founded in 2003, the 700 members of the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club have worked closely with the Department of Conservation, council, landowners and the community to create and maintain 50-60km of trails.
They’ve been shortlisted twice for the Trustpower National Community Awards.
Secretary Adam Carlson recalls: “We do most of our trail building in winter because people don’t have much to do. This trail was mostly built in the dark. We left the tools up here and it snowed, so people came and dug them up, then got to work.”
Members give up their Wednesday nights to the job and rack up about 3000 hours yearly.
Carlson says the plan is to dig two trails or a dual-purpose trail to accommodate both walkers and bike riders.
