Perhaps it’s a challenge to climb Queenstown Hill, Ben Lomond or to head out for a run every morning, there’s something about Queenstown that makes you appreciate being outside and want to try something new.
If you have a need for speed there’s numerous jet boat companies operating on Lake Wakatipu, in Skippers Canyon and along the Kawarau and Shotover rivers. Whether you want to learn about the history of Skippers Canyon or you’d like to experience real Middle-earth, there’s something for everyone.
It wouldn’t be a quintessential Queenstown holiday without throwing yourself off a ledge to face a fear of heights head on. If you’re interested in getting outside your comfort zone, we’ve got skydiving, bungy jumping, canyon swinging, tandem hangliding and paragliding, or to ease into it you could warm yourself up on a zip line adventure.
In winter, the mountains open for the season and Queenstown is filled with skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. There are four ski fields all within 90 minutes of downtown, each with varying degrees of terrain. This could be the winter you hit the black runs for the first time, or book a once in a lifetime heli ski trip to experience powder in the mountain ranges nearby, delivering magnificent views—and brag-worthy photos to boot.
Rafting, canyoning and river surfing
If you fancy getting wet, Queenstown has thrills and spills of a different kind over summer in the form of whitewater rafting, river surfing and canyoning.
