Night Ski at Coronet Peak

Ride two mountains in one day, just another Queenstown winter holiday

Your winter holidays are precious and for avid skiers and snowboarders maximizing hours up the mountains can be just as important as having a great time with friends and family.

Queenstown is widely regarded as the Southern Hemisphere’s premier four season lake and alpine resort, and for good reason.

With a centrally located international airport, easy access to four world class ski areas, a vibrant après ski scene and more off mountain activities than you can name, Queenstown is set up to pack more adventure into your winter holiday so you can make the most of every minute in paradise.

For those wanting to make the most of one day here are some top tips for an epic winter adventure.

Treat yourself with a hot, strong coffee and indulgent breakfast at any of Queenstown’s cafés, to tantalise the taste buds and ensure you have enough fuel to go the distance.

Now that the internal fire is stoked it’s time to head for the hills, making your way up to either The Remarkables, Treble Cone or Cardrona Alpine Resort ski areas for some fresh turns or playful park riding.

Having spent the morning exploring the terrain, you’ve worked up an appetite and it’s time to reward yourself with some much needed food while absorbing the majestic vista that is the Southern Alps.

If you’ve got a packed lunch or have picked up something on mountain, Lake Alta at the Remarkables is an inspirational lunch pot, or take Shadow chair up to the lookout over Queenstown. If you’re at Cardrona the iconic ‘Queenstown Return’ trail has a number of spots to park up and enjoy the views overlooking the Wakatipu Basin.

After a casual afternoon of laughs and making snow angels with your friends it’s time to head down the mountain in search of craft beer or mulled wine in nearby Frankton or Arrowtown.

Once you’ve replenished your reserves, switch your attention to your next ascent. Make your way to Coronet Peak, just a 20 minute drive from Queenstown for some night ski antics. Illuminated by bright lights, Coronet Peak offers the longest operational hours of all New Zealand ski fields and a truly unique on mountain experience on Friday and Saturday nights and Wednesday nights in July.

Cruise down the trails with Queenstown’s twinkling lights in the distance and the stars overhead and listen to the DJ pumping out the beats. You’ll have just as much fun on the slopes as you will watching the fun unfold as you dig into the homemade wood fire pizza’s and ice cold beverages available from the mountain restaurant or the brand new ice bar.

When your legs can no longer keep up with your enthusiasm it’s time to jump back on the bus and head to one of Queenstown’s many après ski offerings. Whether you’re after a dancefloor to let loose on, or consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur with an intent to track down Queenstown’s best espresso martini, Queenstown has what you need to finish your night off in style, offering a vibrant mix of bars, pubs and clubs to explore.
