Book NowThe road to Glenorchy, a small township at the top of Lake Wakatipu, is a journey filled with beauty and history. Before 1962, the only access to Glenorchy was by horse, foot, or boat, but now a stunning road connects it to Queenstown, offering travelers a remarkable experience.
Leaving Queenstown, the road winds along the eastern edge of Lake Wakatipu, offering breathtaking views of majestic mountains. Throughout the journey, there are numerous pull-ins where you can stop and immerse yourself in the world-class vistas. We know this road intimately and select the perfect spots to stop based on the season and weather conditions, ensuring you have the best experience.
As you relax and take in the incredible sights, we’ll share our knowledge and stories of the area, creating a deeper connection between you and the surroundings. We’ll also capture important moments for you, taking professional photographs that truly reflect the beauty of the environment. Yes, you heard that right, you don’t need to bring your camera, we take care of your photography, which also means they’ll be many photos with all of you in them.
We have a rich background in educating young people about sustainability in the Wakatipu Basin and beyond. Their expertise in this area enhances your understanding and appreciation of the beautiful destination you have chosen to visit.
Once you arrive in the iconic rural town of Glenorchy, you'll have the opportunity to explore its renowned landmarks, such as the wharf and boat shed. The team at authenticAs.org will work with you to create stunning images that you can treasure for years to come. Take a walk along the northern edge of Lake Wakatipu, where you can witness the majestic Dart River flowing into the vast expanse of water. If you visit in spring, the blooming lupins add a burst of color to the already picturesque scenery.
Leaving behind the sealed roads, the adventure continues as the journey progresses towards Paradise and the start of the Dart walking track. The smooth paved road gives way to a gravel road, providing an authentic and unforgettable experience. The route winds through ancient beech forests, with rivers and streams crossing your path. We will make stops along the way, allowing you to fully absorb the sounds and smells of this extraordinary place. The forest is home to a myriad of native plants and birds, adding to the enchantment of the journey.
Keeping your energy levels up during the trip is essential, and we understand the importance of good food. We love the locally grown and produced delicacies of the region and will share these delights with you. Depending on the season, you may have the chance to try our own honey or sample honey from local beekeepers. We’ll provide spring water and a flask of hot water, ensuring you can enjoy a refreshing roadside coffee or tea. On some days, a stop at a local café for a hot drink and a slice will be a delightful addition to the journey.
The Top and Back Tour lasts approximately 6 hours, starting from your accommodation in the Wakatipu Basin and ending with drop-off at the same location or somewhere else in town. The team aims to make frequent stops along the road, offering a diverse range of experiences. Some locations may require short walks through beautiful forests, so comfortable footwear is recommended. The service provided by authenticAs.org is tailored to your preferences, allowing for flexibility and customization. As you build a rapport with the guides, they will suggest options that best suit your interests.
This is not a rushed tour where you quickly hop in and out of the vehicle. Instead, we encourage you to slow down, relax, and fully appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. This is the time to immerse yourself in the stunning environment and learn more about this privileged corner of the world they call home.
The team understands the eagerness to see your photos, so we’ll have a small selection to you the next day with the rest following a few days later.
