Fernhill Bike Park
From local riders to international pros, Fernhill Bike Park boasts a pretty epic network of trails. Built and managed by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, it is welcome for all to use, but join the local club and support the community that has poured decades of effort into the park.
From the raw and rooty tech descents above like Salmon Run, to the flowing progressive jump lines like McNearly Gnarly, and the 60 foot gaps on Dream Track Fernhill Bike Park is the real deal and delivers it all for beginner to pro!
- Location: Queenstown. Access from Wynyard Crescent or from Hammy's Track in the Queenstown Bike Park.
- Difficulty: Beginner to expert and pro.
- Cost: Free, but download the QMTBC app and become a member to show your appreciation!
- Best time to go: All year, although not advised after heavy rain.
The Wynyard DH & Jump Park experience
Fernhill Bike Park is an old Queenstown favourite and is constantly growing thanks to the QMTBC.
A fun flowing downhill track with 226m of descent, some sweet switchback berms and a steep creek section. There’s some serious jump park action, before you hit the Million Dollar Berms and the end of your ride. Bike shuttle companies can pick you up from the bottom and take you up to the top, to do it all over again.
In the freeride jump park, the famous Dream Track was built in 2004 by locals for New World Disorder 5 and extended in 2017. It’s managed by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club and sponsored by Atlas Beer Café.
Dream Track’s huge 60 ft gap jumps may be some of the largest public jumps in the world, described by one rider as being for “seriously sick bikers with a flight complex”. Only for experienced riders, you may find yourself jumping alongside international pros, and New Zealanders like Conor McFarlane or Eddie Masters, who both train here.
But the Wynyard Jump Park isn’t all mammoth screamers. There’s something for all levels, with the smaller jumps on Mini Dream offering great progression for beginners.
If you want an add on to your park experience pedal up ride and ride McNearly Gnarly which starts at the power station on Wynyard Crescent and connects to the Fernhill loop track.
McNearly Gnarly is 2019 addition to the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club network, with 64 berms and 54 jumps, this jump track is already making list of top trails in New Zealand.
