Before heading out for a day hike, such as Ben Lomond, or further afield to The Routeburn it’s a good idea to list your intentions on the Adventure Smart website and make sure you also tell a friend or family member where you are heading and when you expect to be back.

The Mountain Safety Council are a great source of information and have listed a number of safety tips on their website.

It also pays to check in with the local DOC (Department of Conservation) office when you get to Queenstown, to check if there are any weather, track or safety alerts at your chosen location. The office is on street level at 50 Stanley Street.

Before you go, make sure you check the weather forecast. Queenstown’s alpine environment means the weather can change quickly and can catch you out if you are not prepared. Take the time to check out these five simple rules to help you stay safe on your next adventure.

Most importantly, make sure you pack:

  • A communication device – cell phone, satellite phone, GPS alert
  • Enough food and water for unexpected extra nights
  • A warm jacket, layers of warm clothing, or even a survival blanket
  • A torch
  • Matches or lighter
